Researcher staff and student accounts and the library

If you are a University of Bedfordshire researcher, you will have been set up with 2 user accounts - a staff account and a student account. Please use your student account (username is a registration number) to access all digital library resources, not your staff account (username e.g. jbloggs). Your student account gives you full access to all of our digital library resources - your staff account does not. Just use your staff account for accessing your GroupWise email, and for printing in the library if you have been authorised to charge this to your faculty and have been given a separate staff ID card for this purpose.

DISCOVER/EBSCO "sign in" problems

We've had some complaints from students that they can't sign into their DISCOVER/EBSCO accounts or that they have forgotten their password and the "Forgot your password" links are not working correctly. However we don't have enough information about the problems or the error messages received for EBSCO to be able to fix it. So, if you do have a problem, please let us know with details of your account name and any error messages you get, and we will try to get the problem fixed.

Wiley journals at risk Saturday 27 October 10am-12 noon

We've been warned that our access to ejournals hosted by Wiley Online Library may be disrupted on Saturday 27 October between 10am and 12 noon, while the supplier upgrades their system. This will affect any ejournals with "wiley.com" in the URL.

Possible disruption to EBSCO "sign in" accounts, Friday 26 October

EBSCO have warned us of maintenance affecting login to personalised accounts on Friday 26th October for one hour between 12 noon and 1pm. All our EBSCO databases (including DISCOVER) could be affected. Access to the databases themselves is not affected - only the "sign in" functionality to your individual account and folders.

DISCOVER "Sign In" confusion

At the top right of the screen in DISCOVER you'll notice a "Sign in" link

This has been causing some confusion. It refers to an account you may or may not have created with EBSCO, who supply as with DISCOVER as well as a number of other databases. This account allows you to:

  • Save preferences
  • Organize your research with folders
  • Share your folders with others
  • View others' foldersSave and retrieve your search history
  • Create email alerts and/or RSS feeds
  • Gain access to your saved research remotely.
You can set up this account with any username and password you like - it is not linked in any way to your University username and password, and if you try logging in with your University username and password you will not find an account already set up for you.

The Sign In link is also not a way of logging into DISCOVER from off campus. If you are off campus and you follow our link to DISCOVER, you will see a UoB login screen asking for your username and password before you are passed through to DISCOVER. If you see an error message at this stage it indicates a problem with your account, and you will need to contact us

Redirect error when trying to access Web of Knowledge records through DISCOVER off campus

We've had reports of a problem when trying to get to Web of Knowledge records found through DISCOVER when off campus - you first get a message that Web of Knowledge doesn't recognise your computer's IP address, and are then asked for an Institutional login. Having selected "UK Access Management Federation" and then "University of Bedfordshire", you then get an error message like this:

or this:

We're reported this problem to the providers of both DISCOVER and Web of Knowledge, and will let you know when we have a solution.

Reserving books on loan from DISCOVER

We have an improved feature in DISCOVER, if you have discovered a book which is out on loan you can now reserve it without having to do a separate search in the Library Catalogue

Click the "Retrieve Catalogue Item" link to go straight through to the library record for that book, then click the Reserve button.
